The latest workout craze also masquerades as a piece of home decor. The Mirror is a high-end piece of equipment that uses an LCD mirror to bring live and on-demand workouts to the comfort of your home. Created by the New York-based startup Mirror, this item is highly acclaimed by major celebrities like Alicia Keys, Ellen DeGeneres, and Jennifer Aniston. But how does it work? And why is it so popular?

How It Works

When not in use, the Mirror looks just like any other full-length mirror. To use it for a home workout, it’s operated through an app. You can either mount it on the wall or use its carbon steel stand.

To get started, first you enter your personal health details, such as weight and height, and your fitness goals into the app. Next, you connect to the Mirror with a Bluetooth heart rate monitor on your wrist. This will help monitor your heart rate and calorie-burning progress. You can also connect to the Mirror with an Apple Watch.

According to Business Insider, there are more than 50 on-demand workout classes added to the app weekly. They include a variety of cardio, boxing, strength training, yoga, barre, Pilates, boxing, and HIIT exercises to choose from. If you feel intimidated, you can choose between beginner and expert levels.

When you get started with a class, you can see the instructor in the Mirror and hear them through the built-in sound system. Worried about fingerprints? Not a problem. You can control everything through the app without ever having to touch the Mirror. Need your motivational workout music? That’s not a problem either. You can use background music controlled through the app or even link to your Spotify playlist.

As you exercise, you can match your positioning and posture to look just like the instructor, ensuring that you’re doing it correctly. During the workout, you may see a smaller image of the instructor in the bottom corner doing an alternate exercise. This exercise is personalized to each user, according to Business Insider. For example, if you have some sort of injury, the Mirror may give you an alternate workout to avoid aggravating it.

In addition to these on-demand workouts, there are also seven to 12 live classes each day running between 6 a.m. and 1 p.m., and between 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

The Benefits

The Mirror offers a variety of benefits. First, it allows people with hectic schedules to get a high-quality workout at home. Second, it makes it easy to see whether you’re doing a particular exercise correctly or not, so you can adjust yourself if needed. Third, its personalized experience ensures that you’re doing exercises that will get you the results you want. Finally, it blends in with your home decor without taking up any awkward space like a treadmill or elliptical would.

The Cost

The Mirror costs $1,495 for the equipment itself, along with $39 per month for access to live classes.

Other big celebrities that use the Mirror include Allison Williams, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kate Hudson. Some celebrities, like Lady Gaga, have bought the Mirror for family members.

While the Mirror may be costly, it does offer significant value as a piece of home workout equipment. If you’re finding it harder and harder to make it to the gym, it’s definitely worth a look.
