There’s a major epidemic spreading throughout our country, and it’s set to claim the lives of millions, including our children, if we don’t do something about it IMMEDIATELY.
With 1.4 million new cases diagnosed each year, diabetes has become the 7th leading cause of death in the United States. Approximately 29 million Americans are suffering from diabetes, and what’s even more frightening is that 25% of these individuals are unaware of their diagnosis – left untreated, the risk for developing serious, and often fatal, complications associated with diabetes is dramatically heightened!
Additionally, more than one-third of the American population, about 86 million adults (including young adults > 20 years old), has prediabetes and the devastating reality is that approximately 90% of these individuals are naïve to their risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. Given these alarming statistics, combined with the $245 billion annual economic burden diabetes accounts for in the United States – Diabetes has become a major public health concern and immediate action must be taken to confront the risk factors head on in order to prevent this epidemic from rising in the future.
Diabetes occurs when our body is unable to make a sufficient supply of insulin (Type 1, approximately 5% of those diagnosed) or unable to use the insulin properly (Type 2, approximately 95% of those diagnosed). As a result, the blood sugar supply in our body builds up in the blood, increasing the risk of life-altering ailments including heart disease/stroke, adult onset blindness/visual problems, kidney disease, and lower limb amputations. Individuals who are overweight, > 45 years of age, have a family history of Type 2 diabetes, are inactive, have a history of gestational diabetes or gave birth to a baby weighing more than 9 lbs are at increased risk of developing diabetes.
What’s even more disheartening is the rise in Type 2 diabetes among children and adolescents over the last decade in particular. Although the prevalence of youth diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes continues to be higher, the Journal of Diabetes has termed Type 2 diabetes among youth an “emerging epidemic.” Furthermore, the prevalence rate of children and adolescents diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes has risen from what was less than 5% in 1994 to what is now estimated to account for 20% of all newly diagnosed cases. Most often diagnosed in early adolescence, these children face a lifetime of chronic illness, taking away the simple pleasures and joys of not just their youth, but that of the rest of their life.
Despite these challenges…there is hope! The great news is that individuals with prediabetes have the opportunity to change their future by taking the initiative to implement healthy lifestyle habits, lowering their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by as much as 58%! And still those with Type 2 diabetes can manage and even reverse many of the symptoms of their disease by eating fewer and healthier calories, reducing the amount of fats and sugars consumed in their diets, and getting more exercise.
But what if there was something more that could be done? Something that has been scientifically proven to lower ALL of the risk factors associated with diabetes?!
