Do you consider yourself a pretty positive person? Even if you do, think back over the past week or so – how many times have you had negative thoughts, doubts, or been hard on yourself or others? You may not be doing enough to cultivate and preserve your PMA.

Positive Mental Attitude (PMA) was officially coined as a term by the famous personal development author Napoleon Hill. His book “Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude” defines PMA as comprising of  “the ‘plus’ characteristics symbolized by such words as faith, integrity, hope, optimism, courage, initiative, generosity, tolerance, tact, kindliness, and good common sense.” In other words, PMA is the philosophy of having an optimistic disposition in every situation in one’s life, regardless – the idea is that a positive attitude attracts positive changes, achievements, and even other positive people.

So how do we cultivate this kind of attitude? Here are five tips to help you build your PMA: 

1 – Express Gratitude. Gratitude forms the roots from with your positive mental attitude will grow. Every day, take 5 minutes to write down 3 things you are grateful for…trust us, this simple practice alone will change your outlook on life.

2 – Create awareness of negative thoughts. Sometimes we’re feeling down but don’t necessarily realize why. It’s important to cultivate an “observers’ mind” to be able to look objectively at your own situation and identify the source of the negative thoughts.

3 – Fill your mind with positive information.Actively seeking out inspiring and positive messages – whether they are found in books, movies, podcasts, personal mentors, or friends – can flood your mind with positive energy.

4 – Move your body. In order to grow and maintain a positive mental attitude, movement is critical, both physiologically (hormones, endorphins, etc.) and mentally (confidence, a sense of accomplishment, etc.). Movement can also be used to disrupt negative feelings. So if you’re feeling down, go exercise, go for a brisk walk, or go play a fun game outside!

5 – Do something productive. Having a sense of accomplishment and forward momentum can help grow an unstoppable PMA and can also help bring you out of a negative state. Whether it’s cleaning a room in your home, accomplishing a task, planning out your day, or cooking a healthy meal, the energy generated by doing something good for yourself can set off a chain reaction of powerfully positive energy!
